The 2006 festival spotlighted the issue of Class in America, premiered documentaries on Hurricane Katrina and once again brought filmmaking legends together with emerging artists. Full Frame awarded Direct Cinema master Ricky Leacock for an amazing career. D.A. Pennebaker, Robert Drew, Al Maysles, and Ross McElwee all participated in the tribute. After the screening of Sketches of Frank Gehry, Syndey Pollack chatted with Al Berliner about his latest documentary on friend and architect Frank Gehry. Music from the New Orleans TBC Brass Band had everyone in the Plaza on their feet celebrating the sounds and traditions of a place so recently devastated by Katrina. Guest curator St. Clair Bourne put together a series of films, Class in America that explored class in complex, revelatory ways.
The 9th annual festival concluded with our traditional Southern-style Barbecue and Awards Ceremony where we honored incredible films such as Iraq in Fragments, My Country, My Country, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, The Refugee All Stars, and Workingman’s Death.
