  • The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo

2007. USA. 76 mins. Directed by Lisa F. Jackson. Produced by Lisa F. Jackson. A Women Make Movies Release.

Filmmaker Lisa F. Jackson travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo to document the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war. With a steady eye and an open heart, Jackson, herself a gang rape survivor, connects with women and girls suffering daily from the physical and emotional wounds inflicted by sexual violence. Jackson also travels into the countryside to interview Congolese soldiers who admit to multiple rapes with shrugged shoulders and a chilling indifference. But as horrifying as these revelations are, the film is never more eloquent than in the moments of common understanding that occur when the filmmaker and the Congolese women share their stories. PB
