Jasmine, a sixteen year-old Chinese peasant, moves from rural Sichuan province to the industrial city of Shaxi and finds work as a thread cutter at the Lifeng blue-jean factory. Sharing a room with 12 other girls, she works from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., seven days a week, earning about six cents an hour. Some of the workers clip clothespins to their eyelids to stay awake. Meanwhile, to stay competitive, factory owner Mr. Lam increases production to the breaking point. Shooting clandestinely, with smuggled equipment and under threat of arrest, director Micha Peled gains extraordinary access into life at a sweatshop, at both ends of its hierarchy. The result is an unprecedented look at the current state of Chinese labor and its impact on the global economy. After seeing the haunting images of bone-tired young workers hunched over their machines you’ll never wear your jeans in quite the same way.  ST
