"That dog domesticated me," says ex-con Pedro Cajias, referring to his canine companion.referring to the jail, or la chirola, where he did time. In this powerful and poetic film, in which Cajias delivers a fragmented monologue as if he were still in prison, form and content are in tense relation. As he relives his memories, the frames come and go out of focus, the narrative, which could be taking place anywhere in Latin America, unfolding like a Shakespearean tragedy. Yet Cajias does not view his long incarceration among criminals, murderers, guerrilla fighters, and paramilitaries as a punishment. To him it was like being in a shelter in which all lived together as a sort of brotherhood, away from the real prison—the outside. Now that he is free, Cajias has chosen to live at the margins of society, sharing his life with the barren land, the starry sky, and a wolf pack. MR |
