From a very young age, Evan Perry was obsessed with death and dying—on vacation, he talked about killing his father with a rifle; when he learned how to play guitar, he wrote songs about depression and suicide. At ten, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through therapy, hospitals and treatment centers, Evan’s interest in death was intense and ongoing. At fifteen, he committed suicide. This film delves into the complexity of his disease, sharing one family’s journey through the maze of mental illness, as told by the filmmaker—Evan’s mother. Director Dana Perry skillfully blends home movies and interviews with family, friends, and doctors into an extraordinarily personal document of life, love, and loss. Deeply disturbing, this film is at once an intimate portrait of a complicated young boy and his loving family, a personal story about grief and healing, a glimpse into our mental healthcare system, and a test of the therapeutic limits of art.
