The Bangor International Airport in Maine is often the last stop for American troops leaving for war in Iraq and Afghanistan and the first when they return. The Way We Get By is the story of three senior citizens who faithfully come to the airport day or night to greet returning troops or share a moment with departing soldiers. Bill Knight, Joan Gaudet, and Jerry Mundy have spent the last five years welcoming over 700,000 soldiers home with a handshake, a hug, and a thank you. They find that their encounters with the troops are more than a welcome distraction from their own health problems and personal losses—they are a source of strength and inspiration as they face the challenges of growing old. This is an intimate and moving story of aging with dignity and living life for a purpose. NT Q & A with filmmakers following screening. |
