Man On Wire
Man On Wire
2007. United Kingdom. 90 min.
Directed by James Marsh.
Produced by James Marsh and Simon Chinn.

In 1974, Frenchman Phillippe Petit held New York City in thrall when he balanced for nearly an hour on a wire suspended 1,350 feet above the ground between the recently erected Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. He crossed the wire eight times before being hauled off by the police. Through dramatic archival footage and stunning interviews with all involved, this deeply moving and exuberant documentary unveils the extraordinary preparations it took to pull off the "artistic crime of the century."

Call for Entries: Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant
Full Frame is accepting applications for the Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant through Friday, February 6th. Given in memory of filmmaker Garrett Scott (Cul De Sac: A Suburban War Story, Occupation: Dreamland), the grant funds first time documentary makers for travel and accommodations at the festival, where grant recipients will be given access to films, participate in master classes and be mentored by experienced filmmakers.

"The four days I spent at Full Frame introduced me to fellow filmmakers and their films, to industry insiders and documentary aficionados. I made a few friends and I saw a ton of great movies. This process enabled me to hone my ability to pitch the film, strategize fundraising, and envision the process of completing the film. The Garrett Scott Grant offered a valuable, early endorsement, and it helped increase my social networks. For a first time filmmaker, that sort of encouragement means a great deal." - (Rebecca Richman Cohen, 2008 Grant Recipient for War Don Don)

E-NEWS: January 2009

Career Award: St. Clair Bourne
Full Frame will honor eminent documentary filmmaker St. Clair Bourne with the 2009 Career Award. Bourne, a great friend of Full Frame and a regular presence at the Durham festival, died suddenly in December 2007 at the age of 64. In his 36-year career, he produced or directed more than 40 films including Making "Do the Right Thing," Paul Robeson: Here I Stand, and John Henrik Clarke: A Great and Mighty Walk.

Filmmaker Sam Pollard will curate a selection of Bourne's films to be exhibited at the Festival, incorporating Bourne's early work, his more prominent titles, and films that influenced his career. "Saint was a mentor to many of us young producers who were trying to establish our careers," said Pollard. "He was always available to look at our films at any stage and always there with fresh insights into how we could make our work better. He will be terribly missed."

Bourne curated the 2006 thematic series "Class in America" and was a curator in the 2007 10th Anniversary program "The Power of Ten." Full Frame is honored to celebrate Bourne's extensive body of work and his significant role in the filmmaking community at this year's festival.

Thematic Program: This Sporting Life
Filmmaker Steve James, director of the critically acclaimed Hoop Dreams, will curate a series of sports films for the festival's 2009 thematic program.

"When Full Frame approached me about curating a series on sports films, it took me two seconds to say yes," James said. "I've been a fan of how Full Frame selects a topic each year to do a series of films around. It challenges the viewer to engage with documentaries both thematically and historically, something that doesn't happen enough in the festival world." According to James, many talented directors over the decades have been attracted to sports as a setting for their films because of the powerful potential for drama, high stakes of personal failure, success, and possible redemption.

The series entitled "This Sporting Life" will feature documentary and fiction films and include some of the lesser-seen dramatic films that take place in the world of sports. Selections will include those that specifically anticipated the emergence of the sports genre in documentary filmmaking, which continues to be honest, vibrant, and original.

In recent years, Full Frame has screened James' Stevie, Reel Paradise, and At the Death House Door, which received the 2008 Full Frame Inspiration Award.

The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) will open in New York on Friday, November 21 at the IFC Center, with a national roll-out to follow. Famed cinematographer Ellen Kuras and Thavisouk Phrasavath have collaborated to create what is at once an epic story of a people brutally vanquished by a dirty war and also an intimate portrait of one Laotian family's struggle to confront the psychic wounds of exile. Filmed over the course of 23 years, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) is a lyrical meditation on the ravages of war, the meaning of sanctuary, and the enduring bonds of family. The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) received the 2008 Full Frame Spectrum Award.
