International documentary film festival celebrates first decade with nine weeks of Grand Jury-winning films
(Durham)--Full Frame Documentary Film Festival does not officially take place until April 12 – 15, but the festival starts its tenth anniversary early this winter with Countdown to Ten, a special weekly screening of Full Frame’s thirteen Grand Jury Award-winners from the last nine years of the festival. The series will start on February 7th and will screen at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on successive Wednesday evenings (with the exception of February 14th). The screenings have been priced at a discounted rate of $4 per ticket, and will go on sale at the Carolina Theatre on January 29. A full schedule is listed below.
The Grand Jury Award is Full Frame’s most prestigious recognition, presented each year to a film chosen by a jury of filmmakers, scholars and other notables. Past winners have often gone on to garner additional awards and critical acclaim. The films encompass a wide variety of themes, from the very public and political, to the most intimate and domestic. “The artistry in all these films,” Festival founder, CEO and Artistic Director Nancy Buirski comments, “is as powerful as the storytelling. We are thrilled to be able to show these extraordinary works again as we move into the second decade of our festival.”
The films that will be part of Countdown to Ten include: Travis by Richard Kotuk; In Harm's Way, by Jan Krawitz; Fotoamator (Photographer) by Dariusz Jablonski; Return with Honor, by Freida Lee Mock and Terry Sanders, La Bonne Conduite: 5 Histoires d' Auto École, (The Way I look at You: 5 Stories of Driving School) by Jean-Stéphane Bron; Avant de Partir (Before Leaving) by Marie de Laubier; Benjamin Smoke by Jem Cohen and Peter Sillen; The First Year by Davis Guggenheim; Être et Avoir (To Be and To Have) by Nicolas Philibert; Control Room, by Jehane Noujaim; Shape of the Moon, by Leonard Retel Helmrich; Murderball, by Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro; and Iraq in Fragments by James Longley.
“Our Countdown to Ten series is our way of thanking our audience and volunteers,” Buirski states. “They have helped this festival become what it is today, an integral part of the growing documentary community. This year we wanted to be able to take the time to reflect on the great documentaries of the past ten years and share with our community the issues and images that helped define an era.”
