DESCRIPTION:Join us for our final Summer Road Show outdoor screening of MAMA BEARS. \n“Once you know how important fighting for your kid is\, you can’t do anything else but fight for them\,” is the statement that begins Daresha Kyi’s poignant documentary about a group of conservative Christian women that call themselves the “Mama Bears.” In seeking to avoid the ostracization\, homelessness\, conversion therapy\, or suicide that often befall queer youth from conservative families\, these Mama Bears chose to affirm their LGBTQ+ children. They became fierce advocates for this community—from offering “mom hugs” to gay kids at Pride parades to speaking out publicly against homophobia. We follow the stories of three Christian individuals: Kimberly\, whose young trans daughter\, Kai\, knew she was a girl at three; Sara\, whose adult son Parker has struggled with his sexuality his whole life because of his Christian upbringing; and finally Tammi\, who is still trying to heal her relationship with God and her mother after finally accepting that she is gay. This hopeful film hints at a more loving future. \nThe film will start at 8:30 PM. \nBring some blankets and snacks to enjoy a movie under the stars in Durham Central Park. DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE TO WATCH\nJoin us at the 24th Annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival for the official launch of the BIPOC Documentary Editor’s Database! \nProminent industry professionals\, including Sam Pollard\, Jean Tsien and Lillian Benson\, will be speaking to introduce this vital new tool. \nThis public database is a searchable\, user-friendly website of BIPOC documentary editors to promote and increase the number of BIPOC editors hired across the documentary field. This website has been created in response to the current lack of inclusion and access in documentary production. The documentary community is currently mostly white\, and this has led to an overwhelming system of white creatives mentoring and promoting other white creatives already in their circles. Like all areas of production\, this is very true in documentary edit rooms where\, according to a recent study\, 87% of doc editors are white. Without a fundamental and intentional effort to provide tangible long-term support to BIPOC talent\, these systemic issues will remain. It will take all of us to make lasting change. This database aims to promote BIPOC editing talent right now\, with the long term goals of widening the pool of BIPOC talent considered “veteran” documentary editors and to help bridge the barriers of moving from assistant to full editor. His father\, Ma Ke\, was the artistic director of the Shanghai Chinese Opera Theater. After being humiliated and forbidden from working for a decade during the Cultural Revolution\, Ma Ke immersed himself in theater. The mysterious excitement of Ma Ke’s creative world inspired the young Maleonn\, but his father’s absences stoked early feelings of resentment. \nWhen Ma Ke is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s\, Maleonn pours everything into an ambitious new theater project: “Papa’s Time Machine\,” a visually stunning time-travel adventure told with human-sized puppets. At the play’s heart are autobiographical scenes inspired by Maleonn’s memories with his father. He hopes this will bring the them together artistically and personally.  \nWith enthusiasm both domestically and from abroad\, the play shows signs of a promising future. But Ma Ke’s condition deteriorates. Maleonn is torn between the original goal to honor his father and the pressure towards commercial success. Ma Ke struggles to contribute to the play\, and barely recognizes the play when it is completed.  \nFacing his father’s painful decline\, Maleonn becomes more aware of life’s complexities. There are no effortless masterpieces or simple solutions. And there’s no traveling back in time to retrieve what has been lost. There is however\, the relationship that has developed with co-director Tianyi. He proposes to her\, ready to become a partner and a father\, and to carry on forward with a new outlook on his art and life. \n  \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \nYang SUN is a documentary director and cameraman based in Beijing. He was on staff at China’s Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio\, making documentaries for broadcasters including CCTV\, Youku and the Travel Channel. Leo Chiang is a Taiwanese-American filmmaker based in San Francisco and Taipei. His documentary\, MR. CAO GOES TO WASHINGTON\, won the Inspiration Award at the 2012 Full Frame Documentary Festival. His previous film\, Emmy® Award-nominated A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES\, picked up eight awards and aired on the American PBS series\, Independent Lens. Leo received a MFA in film production from University of Southern California. The circumstances of his death echo the long horror of lynching in America\, especially in the South\, and intersect with the stories of two other communities seeking justice and reconciliation. In Monroe\, Georgia\, a diverse group of reenactors promotes healing by annually performing the 1946 quadruple lynching of two African American couples. Through narrated invitations to public lynchings that play over gruesome archival images\, the film additionally explores the 1934 murder of Claude Neal and others. The brainchild of Mexican anthropologist Santiago Genovés\, the experiment featured a curated cross-section of nationalities\, religions\, and backgrounds\, designed to reflect the world in microcosm. The participants did not know that their conditions were engineered to foment disagreement\, lust\, and even violence. Their limited privacy and restricted movement were compounded by Genovés’s questionnaires and constant monitoring\, as he logged their every annoyance and attraction as scientific data. Eventually panic ensued when behaviors did not adhere to the master plan and decisions were made to steer the boat into a direct path of danger. In Marcus Lindeen’s film the surviving members gather on board a faithful replica of the original vessel to recall the lessons learned over their 101 harrowing days at sea.
