SUMMARY:Midnight Family
DESCRIPTION:Midnight Family (81 minutes)\nDirected by Luke Lorentzen\nAugust 6\, 2019\nThe Cary Theater (Cary\, NC)\nFilm Website\nDoors open at 6:30 pm. Film starts at 7:00 pm.  \n  \n“A deft mix of big-picture doc-making and intimate moments… not to mention a wild—and remarkably eye-opening—ride.”\n– David Fear\, Rolling Stone \n  \nIn Mexico City the Ochoas run a family-owned ambulance service\, one of many private paramedic outfits addressing the massive civic void left when there are just 45 municipal ambulances serving a population that tops 9 million. Living in circumstances only slightly less dire than those of the victims they treat and transport\, the Ochoa family nightly faces the spectrums of urgency and boredom\, honor and corruption\, life and death—all with admirable resolve. Teenage Juan captivates as he helms the family’s ambulance\, with his father\, uncle\, and younger brother rounding out the band of nocturnal rescuers who careen through Mexico City’s neon-noir streets evading dense traffic\, competing paramedics\, and dubious police. In director Luke Lorentzen’s bold and balletic vérité treatment\, action\, drama\, humor\, and pathos fill the screen while an ominous microcosm of health care and humanity plays out in stark relief. A suspenseful and vivid tale of subsistence\, Midnight Family refers not only to the Ochoas but to the enduring community of\, and connections among\, those living and dying in the dark. \n  \nThis event is free\, but RSVPs are recommended. Screenings can reach capacity and RSVPs will prioritize admittance. \nFirst Team + Spotlight Member RSVP – Begins August 3\, 2019 at 9 am (promotional code required)\nGeneral Public RSVP – Begins August 5\, 2019 at 9 am \n \n \n \n \nThis event is part of the Full Frame Road Show Series and is presented by American Tobacco Campus and Capitol Broadcasting Company\, Inc.

SUMMARY:Jay Myself
DESCRIPTION:Jay Myself (78 minutes)\nDirected by Stephen Wilkes\nAugust 1\, 2019\nFull Frame Theater (Durham\, NC)\nFilm Website\nDoors open at 6:30 pm. Film starts at 7:00 pm.  \n  \n“Jay Myself acts as an excellent last hurrah\, a requiem if you will\, for a little piece of NYC’s soul.” \n– Michael Caputo\, Shuffle Online \n  \nEven if you don’t know the name Jay Maisel\, you know his photographs. Over a lengthy career\, his work has ranged from iconic images of jazz musicians\, to uncredited commercial work\, to unparalleled color street photography from around the world. He has long been recognized and respected by his peers both as an artist and as one who has been successful in the business of photography. But perhaps his most astonishing achievement was The Bank. In 1966 Maisel purchased a six-story building at 190 Bowery in Manhattan\, and for nearly 50 years he filled all 72 rooms of it with his work and his life. He collected objects for their intrinsic values of design in much the same way he created photographs by “collecting” values of light\, shade\, form\, and color. On the eve of the gargantuan task of packing up and moving out\, Maisel reflects on his life\, his career\, and the nature of collecting. \n  \nThis event is free\, but RSVPs are recommended. Screenings can reach capacity and RSVPs will prioritize admittance. \nFirst Team + Spotlight Member RSVP – Begins July 29\, 2019 at 9 am (promotional code required)\nGeneral Public RSVP – Begins July 31\, 2019 at 9 am \n\n \n \n \nThis event is part of the Full Frame Road Show Series and is presented by American Tobacco Campus and Capitol Broadcasting Company\, Inc.

SUMMARY:Minding the Gap
DESCRIPTION:Minding the Gap (98 minutes)\nDirected by Bing Liu \nFebruary 14\, 2019\nThe Carolina Theatre (Durham\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm \nHow far can nostalgia for childhood carry us into our futures? With equal fluidity and command\, filmmaker Bing Liu trails skateboarders through the streets of Rockford\, Illinois\, with the ease and speed of one who can only be skating too. Peppered with home video he shot of his friends’ skateboarding antics over more than a decade\, Minding the Gap is a fearless\, introspective saga of the journey from youth to adulthood. For Liu and his friends Zack and Keire\, their violent family histories are as linked to their identities as the hours spent on grinds and ollies. Liu affectingly explores the virtue and damage of their past and present experiences. Keire struggles to be independent in the aftermath of his father’s death\, while Zack is a new father and battles alcoholism. Liu respectfully confronts his own mother amid his troubling realization of Zack’s abusive nature. For the trio to heal\, Liu films; in filming\, they grow. SUMMARY:Sammy Davis\, Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me
DESCRIPTION:Sammy Davis\, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me (100 minutes)\nDirected by Sam Pollard \n  \nNovember 8\, 2018\nHayti Heritage Center (Durham\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nSammy Davis\, Jr. had the kind of career that was indisputably legendary\, so vast and multi-faceted that it was dizzying in its scope and scale. And yet\, his life was complex\, complicated\, and contradictory. Davis strove to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting political territory. He was the veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions trying to stay relevant; he frequently found himself bracketed by the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America; he was the most public black figure to embrace Judaism\, thereby yoking his identity to another persecuted minority. \nFeaturing new interviews with such luminaries as Billy Crystal\, Norman Lear\, Jerry Lewis\, Whoopi Goldberg\, and Kim Novak\, with never-before-seen photographs from Davis’s vast personal collection and excerpts from his electric performances in television\, film\, and concert\, Sammy Davis\, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory blazed across the major flashpoints of American society from the Depression through the 1980s. \nhttps://www.menemshafilms.com/sammy-davis-jr   \n  \nFree RSVPs can be made via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Won't You Be My Neighbor?
DESCRIPTION:Won’t You Be My Neighbor?\nDirected by Morgan Neville \nOctober 25\, 2018\nJoy Performance Center (Kings Mountain\, NC)\n7:00 pm (doors at 6:30 pm) \n  \nFred Rogers transformed children’s television with Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister who believed that love was the pathway to personal growth and development. With his groundbreaking show\, he provided a space for intimate and straightforward exchange. In his gentle discussions with young guests\, listening became a revolutionary act; he acknowledged the fears\, worries\, and hardships of growing up. Through a cast of puppets\, he also managed to broach topics like disability and race\, offering families the tools to speak frankly about the world around them. Morgan Neville’s stunning film reveals the origins of the show\, the ways it connected to current events\, and its significant impact on the lives of children\, and adults\, across the country. Interviews with family\, friends\, and colleagues reveal that Rogers was indeed a visionary\, but he was also human\, and he faced his own share of shortcomings and self-doubt. In his life\, Rogers contributed singular authentic exchange both on and off the air.  \nhttp://www.focusfeatures.com/wont-you-be-my-neighbor/ \n  \nFree RSVPs are now available and can be made via Eventbrite. RSVPs are recommended but are not required – screenings can reach capacity and RSVPs will prioritize admittance. \n  \nIn partnership with Full Frame\, the North Carolina Arts Council\, and local arts organizations\, the Common Ground project is a traveling program that facilitates free documentary screenings and discussions in small towns throughout North Carolina. SUMMARY:Capturing The Flag
DESCRIPTION:Capturing The Flag (76 minutes)\nDirected by Anne de Mare \n  \nOctober 18\, 2018\nThe Full Frame Theater (Durham\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nIn 2013\, in Shelby County v. Holder\, the Supreme Court invalidates the part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act requiring certain states to submit changes in voting laws to the Justice Department for approval. Almost immediately\, certain states take voter suppression measures such as enacting voter ID laws\, redrawing district boundaries\, and repealing same-day registration. Three months before the 2016 election\, a group of volunteers across the country mobilizes to work on voter protection—to observe elections and to assure that all those who wish to vote are legally allowed to do so. Laverne Berry\, Steven Miller\, and Claire Wright are assigned to North Carolina. Five days before Election Day\, they arrive in Fayetteville to familiarize themselves with the local situation. SUMMARY:This Is Home
DESCRIPTION:This Is Home (91 minutes)\nDirected by Alexandra Shiva \n  \nSeptember 6\, 2018\nAlamo Drafthouse Cinema (Raleigh\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe whiteboard in a Baltimore classroom reads “I’m lost\,” one of many English-language basics for newly arrived refugees. It’s an example of This Is Home’s visual approach to the myriad details of the refugee experience. Through brilliant observational filmmaking\, This Is Home tells the story of four Syrian families on the path to self-sufficiency and eventual success in the United States. Refugee integration assistance\, overseen by State Department–contracted resettlement agencies\, provides an apartment and other services for only eight months—after that\, families are expected to manage independently. Refugee breadwinners must accept the first job they are offered\, learn English\, and figure out transportation\, the supermarket\, school\, and cultural norms. The inherent optimism and capability of the refugees undergird the film’s revelatory narrative\, with an ensemble cast highlighting the drama and humor of the newcomers’ interactions at home and with helpers\, teachers\, and friends. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/thisishomedoc/ \n  \nFree RSVPs can be made via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Inventing Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Inventing Tomorrow (104 minutes)\nDirected by Laura Nix \nAugust 9\, 2018\nThe Cary Theater (Cary\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nThe world’s largest high school science competition takes place in Los Angeles. Each year\, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair invites some 1\,800 finalists who come together to compete but also to connect with their peers from around the globe. This inspiring film follows six participants from Indonesia\, India\, Mexico\, and Hawaii. Spending time with them at home before the competition\, it’s clear that their research is personal. Each competitor’s project revolves around environmental issues in their community\, with challenges like foaming toxic lakes and arsenic contamination. These are significant and complicated problems to solve\, but the students’ innovative inventions may just hold the answers. The competition itself is a sight to behold: the scale of the event\, the incredibly talented pool of participants\, and of course\, the anxious preparations leading up to their final presentations to the judges. These moments are not without excitement\, but the film is not really about winning. When these brilliant young minds consider our collective future\, we’ve all already won. \nhttp://www.inventingtomorrowmovie.com/ \n  \nFree RSVPs can be made via Eventbrite. DESCRIPTION:Blowin’ Up (94 minutes)\nDirected by Stephanie Wang-Breal \nJuly 19\, 2018\nFull Frame Theater (Durham\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nIn 2004\, the United States’ first problem-solving court around prostitution was created in Queens County\, New York. With unparalleled access to the workings of the court\, presided over by the Honorable Toko Serita\, Blowin’ Up captures what it feels like to go through these criminal proceedings as a female defendant. The overwhelming majority of women arrested are undocumented Asian immigrants\, black\, Latina\, and transgender youth. As the film unfolds\, we hear directly from these women and we begin to understand the complex scenarios that bring them into the courtroom. Director Stephanie Wang-Breal’s patient filmmaking documents how individuals can work together to create more humane ways to navigate an inhumane criminal justice system\, and allows us to witness this unique environment as an unfiltered\, immersive experience. \nhttps://www.blowinupfilm.com \n  \nFree RSVPs can be made via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Rodents of Unusual Size
DESCRIPTION:Rodents of Unusual Size (71 minutes)\nDirected by Quinn Costello\, Chris Metzler\, Jeff Springer \nJune 28\, 2018\nAlamo Drafthouse Cinema (Raleigh\, NC)\nFilm starts at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. \nWhen the Great Depression hit Louisiana hard\, Tabasco heir Edward McIlhenny decided to inject the stagnant economy with a surefire moneymaker: importing nutria from Argentina to bolster the local fur trade. Prolific breeders\, these 20-pound rodents with gigantic orange teeth quickly ate their way across the bayou\, turning Louisiana’s wetlands into a wasteland. As the fur trade bottomed out\, trappers stopped keeping nutrias’ numbers down and the rate of land loss exploded. Still reeling from a series of devastating hurricanes\, Louisianans have rallied to address these rodents running amuck through their marsh and help abate the erosion. Further incentivized by a five-dollar bounty for every nutria tail collected\, fishermen and other locals are now on the hunt\, having found a welcome source of income in the off-season. Evil invasive species\, cuddly pet\, or highly sustainable local resource? Directors Quinn Costello\, Chris Metzler\, and Jeff Springer let you decide. Whichever way you fall\, this quirky environmental doc delivers a highly engaging tale. \nhttp://www.rodentsofunusualsize.tv \n  \nFree RSVPs can be made via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Winter Series – Strong Island
DESCRIPTION:Strong Island\nDirected by Yance Ford\nIn 1992 filmmaker Yance Ford’s older brother William was fatally shot during an argument with an auto mechanic. When the white assailant goes unindicted for the killing of the young black Long Island schoolteacher\, the Ford family\, like an appalling number of families in the years that follow\, faces life-altering grief and incomprehensible outrage. A formally inventive investigation and memoir\, the film unearths histories both personal and procedural and confronts perception and memory with Proustian and Varda-esque tact. Succumbing\, but decidedly not surrendering\, to injustice\, Ford undertakes a soulful and cinematic inquisition\, fashioning interviews\, family photos\, and soliloquy into an innovative form of storytelling. By turns assertive and intimate\, Strong Island is a deeply affecting passage\, taking viewers across the variegated shades of gray between black and white. \nThis event is free\, but we recommend reserving free tickets via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Winter Series – Abacus: Small Enough to Jail
DESCRIPTION:Abacus: Small Enough to Jail\nDirected by Steve James\nIn the 1980s\, Thomas Sung was a busy lawyer in New York City\, but he saw a need. There was no bank serving the Chinese immigrant community. Motivated to help\, Sung founded Abacus Federal Savings Bank in Manhattan’s Chinatown. In the decades that followed\, his daughters joined him at the family company\, and the business grew. And then\, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis\, Abacus was the only U.S. bank accused of mortgage fraud. This stunning film chronicles the Sungs’ legal battle as they fight to defend their business and their family name. Through interviews with people with vastly different points of view—journalists covering the trial\, defense lawyers\, and the DA’s office—director Steve James provides a fully realized portrait of the complicated realities of the case. But the heart of the film is in its intimate access to the Sung family. With humor and energy\, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail tracks the many twists and turns of the case\, while introducing us to a family that shares an unforgettable bond. \nThis event is free\, but we recommend reserving free tickets via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Annual Youth Screening – Brooklyn Castle
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Castle  (102 minutes)\nDirected by Katie Dellamaggiore \nNovember 28\, 2017\nThe Carolina Theatre\nFilm starts at 11:00 am\, Doors open at 10:30 am\nFree for Durham Public School teachers and students. Please contact education@fullframefest.org for more information.\n\nBrooklyn Castle tells the compelling stories of five members of the chess team at junior high school I.S. 318 in Brooklyn\, that has won more national championships than any other in the country. The film follows the challenges these kids face in their personal lives as well as on the chessboard\, and is as much about the sting of their losses as it is about the anticipation of their victories. In following these students\, the film illustrates that the “extra” in extracurricular activities are not “extra”—they are essential. Brooklyn Castle shows how these kids’ dedication to chess magnifies their belief in what is possible for their lives. After all\, if they can master the world’s most difficult game\, what can’t they do? \nFull Frame and PBS’s POV are partnering to provide toolkits for teachers. SUMMARY:I Am Not Your Negro
DESCRIPTION:I Am Not Your Negro (93 minutes)\nDirected by Raoul Peck \nOctober 5\, 2017\nThe North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences\nFilm starts at 7:00 pm\, Doors open at 6:30 pm\nFree\, ticket required \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project\, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary\, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X\, and Martin Luther King\, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987\, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript. \nNow\, in his incendiary new documentary\, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical\, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America\, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And\, ultimately\, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders\, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. \nhttp://www.iamnotyournegrofilm.com/ \n \nThis event is free\, but you must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Far Western
DESCRIPTION:Read this exclusive Q+A with director James Payne about the making of Far Western. \nFar Western (83 minutes)\nDirected by James Payne \nSeptember 28\, 2017\nThe Cary Theater\nFilm starts at 7:00 pm\, Doors open at 6:30 pm\nFree\, ticket required \nCountry and western music may be the soulful sound of the mountain\, far\, and Deep South\, but after World War II\, it also shaped a generation growing up in the Far East. Far Western is a music-fueled\, character-driven film about Japan’s history and obsession with American country music. The Far East Network (FEN)\, established just after the war\, broadcast the music to the soldiers stationed in Japan during the U.S. occupation. While the tunes soothed the troops\, the music also captured the imaginations of a “ghost” audience of young but very committed Japanese listeners. Through the stories of colorful musicians\, fans\, and venue owners\, the film explores how this simple yet profound form crossed geographies\, languages\, and histories to create a strange cultural channel between two countries and those who enjoy it in the Far East as well as the Far West. \nhttp://www.farwesternmovie.com/  \n \n  \nThis event is free\, but you must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:QUEST
DESCRIPTION:Read this exclusive Q+A with director Jonathan Olshefski about the making of QUEST. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nQUEST (105 minutes)\nDirected by Jonathan Olshefski \nSeptember 21\, 2017\nHayti Heritage Center\nFilm starts at 7:00 pm\, Doors open at 6:30 pm\nFree\, ticket required \nFilmed over the course of ten years\, QUEST is a thoughtful and nuanced observation of the Rainey family—led by father Christopher (“Quest”) and mother Christine (“Ma”). From the start\, first-time filmmaker Jonathan Olshefski captures tender images of this family’s love: Ma braids her husband’s and daughter PJ’s hair\, joking and laughing; Quest brings PJ to school on the front of his bike each day; and both work tirelessly to ensure financial and emotional support for each other. Planted in the middle of a North Philadelphia block\, the Rainey house is a sublimely run neighborhood hub. Quest’s creation of a weekly drop-in basement radio show draws a constant flux of characters while illustrating the strong sense of community within this neighborhood. As Quest and Ma raise their children\, Olshefski weaves pivotal life experiences with grander issues of poverty\, politics\, and gun violence. QUEST is an ode to the unwavering love and resilience of a specific family\, and a universal reminder that family can give us the strength to keep on going. \nhttp://quest-documentary.com/ \nThis event is free\, but you must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:School Life
DESCRIPTION:School Life (99 min)\nDirected by Neasa Ní Chianáin\, Co-Directed by David Rane \nAugust 31\, 2017\nFull Frame Theater @ American Tobacco\nFilm starts at 7:00 pm\, Doors open at 6:30 pm\nFree\, ticket required \nFor more than 40 years\, John and Amanda Leyden have taught children at Headfort\, a rare Irish primary-age boarding school. When the film opens\, the new school year is just beginning. Boys and girls bid farewell to their parents\, the pangs of their uncertainty palpable. But the air of possibility hovers above the creaking floorboards—here\, there is potential for each and every child. Over the course of a year\, we observe the wonder the Leydens bring to their classrooms and roll with the joys and challenges that the changing seasons bring their young pupils. The film also captures the essence of the spaces they occupy—most poignantly a band clubroom where John spends hours desperately coaching inharmonious musicians through pop song melodies. Throughout\, the couple delicately navigate the needs of their young wards\, sharing the occasional cigarette while they discuss the intricacies of instilling both scholastic rigor and emotional support. With grace and humor\, this vérité portrait submerges us in the ebb and flow of this special place and two teachers at the heart of its magic. \nThis event is free\, but you must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Through the Repellent Fence
DESCRIPTION:Through the Repellent Fence (74 min)\nDirected by Sam Wainwright Douglas\nRead our exclusive Q+A with director Sam Wainwright Douglas!\nJuly 27\, 2017\nFull Frame Theater @ American Tobacco\nFilm starts at 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. After 6:45 pm\, all remaining seats will be filled from the Last Minute Line.\nFree\, ticket required. \nIn the southwestern United States\, the earth and sky connect in never-ending expanses. These vistas inspired revolutionary artists like Robert Smithson and Nancy Holt to create the Land Art movement in the 1960s. Making geography their canvas\, the artists of this movement highlighted humans’ impermanence within the natural environment and brought a new sense of scale to contemporary art. Through the Repellent Fence intercuts lush images of the movement’s most iconic works with the story of the artist collective Postcommodity\, who draw on the tradition of Land Art for a piece about the U.S.-Mexico border. Massive yellow balloons are tethered in a straight line\, crossing each side of the border and stretching a mile in either direction. Reinforcing the notion that boundaries are an illusion\, the project seeks to unite the cultures of both regions\, emphasizing their connection despite the physical barriers that may exist. \nThis event is free\, but you must reserve a ticket via Eventbrite. Please see Eventbrite page for ticket on sale dates and times\, directions\, and parking fees. \n \nTHROUGH THE REPELLENT FENCE – Film Trailer from Big Beard Films on Vimeo. \n  \nThis event is part of the Road Show Summer Series presented by Capitol Broadcasting Company\, Inc. and the American Tobacco Campus.
