Kiarostami’s first film about life outside of his native homeland, shot exclusively on digital video. ABC Africa started with a commission from the United Nations to document the crisis of Uganda’s 1.6 million children orphaned by AIDS. The majority of women and families in Uganda care for children who are not their own. The film sketches out the AIDS epidemic and its effect on the social fabric of a country tearing at the seams.
