Twenty-three thousand people have disappeared in Mexico since 2007. The vast majority are people who were never involved in organized crime: They are mothers, daughters, and sisters who go missing, leaving their families without closure. In Kingdom of Shadows, director Bernardo Ruiz examines this staggering statistic through the powerful stories of three individuals whose lives intersect with the U.S.-Mexico “drug war”: a nun in Monterrey who advocates for the families of the disappeared, a federal agent who infiltrates cartels, and a Texas rancher and former smuggler. Their distinct experiences relate in ways not immediately apparent, exposing dark corners of this current human rights crisis with depth and nuance. Kingdom of Shadows premiered at SXSW before screening at Full Frame 2015, and is now out in theaters (check its website for locations and times). The film is also now available to watch on several on-demand platforms, including Amazon Video and iTunes.

    3 ½ Minutes, Ten Bullets
Aired on HBO on November 23; Available on HBO Go and HBO NOW

On the day after Thanksgiving 2012, Jordan Davis, an African American teenager, was shot and killed while sitting in a car with three friends at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida. The assailant, Michael Dunn, a middle-aged white man, had confronted the teens about their loud music. He later claimed he saw a weapon, though none was ever found. 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets details the ensuing court case, which coincided with a season of “Black Lives Matter” protests. Makes me ponder on the wild west and their poker games pokiesList.org – best au pokies is all we get down under. Tragic American themes of racial prejudice and gun violence loom behind the film’s sensitive portraits of all involved. 3 ½ Minutes, Ten Bullets received the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Justice at Sundance, and screened at Full Frame 2015 as a Center Frame presentation, featuring Ron Davis, Jordan Davis’ father. 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets is now streaming on HBO Go and HBO NOW.

    The Wolfpack
    Now on Netflix

The six Angulo brothers and their disabled older sister have spent their whole lives in a cramped housing project on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, locked away from the outside world, with a collection of thousands of movies as their only access to the outside world. They watch films obsessively and repeatedly, transcribing scripts and creating homemade props and costumes in order to stage elaborate movie reenactments that they then film themselves. Director Crystal Moselle meets the brothers just as they are at a crossroads: one of them, Mukunda, has snuck out of the house in a Michael Myers Halloween mask, paving the way for the other brothers to begin venturing out too. This stranger-than-fiction tale of an unusual family showed at Full Frame this year and won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance in 2015. Stream it on Netflix or watch it on demand now.
