Marina Abramović The Artist Is Present

Invited

If you are not familiar with the work of performance artist Marina Abramović, prepare to be riveted. Abramović is known for stretching the limits of what body and mind can handle, and her fearless physical commitment has made her one of the most renowned artists in her field. This film follows Abramović as she prepares for a career retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and ponders what the implications of this mean for her. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a three-month-long performance piece in which she sits motionless at a table every day during the museum’s operating hours, silently “trading energy” with the revolving audience members across from her. The piece is electrifying to watch and brings forth an astounding outpouring of emotion from the museumgoers. As you are drawn into this exchange over the course of the film, don’t be surprised if you suddenly start contemplating your own relationship with Marina, the artist present.  RM
