“There are three things Angola will do to a man. Number one—it will bring you to crossroads of a turning point. Number two—it will harden you…Number three—it will kill you.” So tells Eugene Tannehill, one of the six inmates Jonathan Stack and Liz Garbus track in this compelling documentary about the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. The film does not attempt to expose the inside of America’s most infamous maximum security prison in a sensationalist or shocking manner. Instead, it follows its subjects in a controlled and non-judgmental fashion, subtly revealing the inner-workings of an American way of life not often investigated. The culmination of three years spent filming inside the penitentiary walls, The Farm speaks of the hopes and struggles of those who may never experience freedom again.
