The Film of Her

NEW DOCS

The Film of Her is an unusual short documentary about film restoration. It is well known that Kemp Niver restored the Library of Congress Paper Print Collection (he received an Academy Award for this achievement in 1954), but here we learn that Howard L. Walls is the one who saved the Paper Prints in 1939. The tree falls in the forest (whether anyone hears it or not) and is turned into paper, which in turn becomes film once more. Much, but not all, of this footage is from the earliest days of cinema. Film restoration is personalized and eroticized—and fictionalized? Who is she?
