Land Without Bread

Thematic Documentary as Witness: Great Films of the Twentieth Century Curated by Mary Lea Bandy

Land Without Bread is Luis Buñuel’s only documentary film, and just as startlingly original as his fiction films. It is an uncompromising revelation of the desperately poor Las Hurdes region in northwest Spain, close to Portugal, in which Buñuel aimed to go beyond the emotions of pity and dread to something stronger. The lushness of Brahm’s Fourth Symphony underscores a narration so condescendingly academic, so aloof that we react with the horror and rage Buñuel sought, for these responses precipitate action.
