Sound and Fury

NEW DOCS

“I am deaf. This is who I am. I want to be deaf. My kids are just like me.” So begins this emotional, challenging story of the conflict between deaf and hearing cultures. Two families linked by marriage and the birth of hearing and deaf children struggle over the new medical technology—the cochlear implant—that is both transforming the lives of deaf children and threatening the survival of deaf culture. For the deaf who grew up speaking expressive sign language, the rejection of deafness in an infant is a denial of the person’s true identity and of their own vibrant culture. Two families face this question, and each comes to its own answer, revealing in the process the deep commonalities of human experience as deaf and hearing mothers and fathers try to do what they think is best for their children.
