In the Street was shot mostly on East 103rd Street in New York City’s East Harlem during the 1940’s by the renowned still photographer Helen Levitt with her good friends Janice Loeb and James Agee. It captures a parade of people who stroll, laugh, cry, fight, flirt, or quietly exist. In the Street is an indispensable aid to the art of looking, bringing to mind Goethe’s statement that “it is good to think, better to look and think, best to look without thinking.”
