In-the-Works

Conversations

The DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival and DocuClub are proud to continue In-the-Works at the 2001 festival. Stutter Step is a video documentary about how, from a childhood of shame and frustration, Jeff Shames has come to accept (and even appreciate) his stutter. Interweaving his own story with those of stutterers whom he admires, Jeff seeks to understand why people like him can’t talk like everybody else. Sister Helen is a tale of a once hard-drinking woman, who after her husband and two sons die of drug and alcohol abuse, turns her life around and becomes a nun. She opens a private shelter for drug and alcohol addicted men, living and working with these men, doing for other mother’s sons what she didn’t do for her own. This is her story and that of the men who had to go on without her. Dancing with Dad: A daughter’s search for a father who was physically present but emotionally absent all her life uncovers a family secret hidden because no one bothered to ask. Her journey tracks the subtle influence of behavior as it travels through generations, questions the assumptions of normality children make about their families and finally considers what a daughter learns from her father about men.
