Originally conceived as a film focusing on gender issues, this cinematic investigation of one of India’s subcultures moves far beyond gender and movingly details how ostracized eunuchs, who are unable to participate in the traditional Hindu family structure, survive in India. Once considered near divine, eunuchs today have been relegated to the outer fringes of society and often must resort to begging and prostitution for income. The centerpiece of the film is Meena and her surrogate family of hijras, and the film, like the lives of these eunuchs, shifts in tone from joy and celebration to tragedy.
