The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition
NEW DOCS
MEN WANTED for Hazardous Journey, Small Wages, Bitter Cold, Long Months of Complete Darkness, Constant Danger, Safe Return Doubtful, Honor and Recognition in Case of Success: This now legendary and prophetic advertisement for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-1916 expedition to the Antarctic drew 5,000 men in search of adventure and glory. Shackleton and 27 men boarded the Endurance, a sailing ship named after Shackleton’s family motto, “By endurance we conquer.” Shackleton was determined to be the first to cross the Antarctic on foot and to claim the continent for Britain; once his ship became trapped by pack ice less than one day’s sail from Antarctica, his objective quickly transformed to bringing each man back to civilization alive. Drawing from ship photographer and cinematographer Frank Hurley’s original stills and 35mm footage, as well as a recent trip to the locations of the original expedition, The Endurance is both visually and narratively compelling.
