A rigged homecoming queen and a rich older man conspire to turn 18-year-old Jewel Offer from a little girl to a woman. All part of Jewel’s senior year in high school, racism, coming of age, and a difficult relationship between father and daughter are treated by the filmmakers with a gentle and intimate touch. The film follows Jewel as she leaps one hurdle after another, learning as she goes. The viewer will be sorry to say good-bye to her at graduation time.
