Raymundo

NEW DOCS

Witnessing the injustice and oppression around him, Argentine filmmaker Raymundo Gleyzer attempted to stare it down with his camera by playing a key role in the creation of Latin American revolutionary cinema. His films, both documentary and narrative, called on the viewer to see the truth and combat the status quo, but they went beyond simple propaganda. His documentary Mexico: Frozen Revolution was selected for exhibition at the Cannes Film Festival. Gleyzer became the target of the dictatorships he so opposed and ultimately fell victim to the death squads. His life is a canvas across which spreads the whole turbulent panoply of 60s and 70s Latin America. In the end, Gleyzer’s work is a reminder of how powerful a tool and a weapon film can be.  JM
