“The great-grandmother’s a prostitute, the grandmother’s a prostitute, the mother’s a prostitute,” says Zana Briski about one of her photography students. The children of Calcutta’s red light district eagerly take to taking pictures of the people and places in their neighborhoods. “Zana Auntie” brings out the best in her students, nurturing their powers of observation while trying to find ways for them to escape the grim future they expect. The film’s power is in establishing the characters of the children and juxtaposing their home life with their spirited photographs.  NK
