Un Modèle pour Matisse: Histoire de la Chapelle du Rosaire à Vence

NEW DOCS

This is a delightful film about a warm and affectionate connection between the artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and his artistic muse, Sister Jaques Marie. At the same time, this is a film about the creation of the Vence Chapel, an all-consuming passion for Matisse from 1947 to 1951. Following his hospitalization for intestinal cancer in 1942, Matisse placed an advertisement in a local newspaper for “a young and pretty night nurse.” It was Sister Jaques Marie (then, Monique Bourgeois) who answered the call, nursed him to health, and became a model for his work. This is a film about a heart-felt connection that expands the popular notions of art and spirituality, of intimacy and joy. Like both the artist and the art, this film is floweringly fabulous!  LD
