Hoxie: The First Stand

NEW DOCS

In 1954, after the Supreme Court handed down the Brown v. Board decision, school board members in Hoxie, Arkansas, who were motivated more by conscience than the law, decided to integrate their schools. All was going well until a LIFE magazine article profiled the town’s decision to do what was “morally right in the sight of God.” At which point, all hell broke loose. Using archival footage, recent interviews with the central figures involved and limited reconstruction sequences, filmmaker David Appleby details the unique story of Hoxie’s struggle to integrate its schools.  JG
