Protocols of Zion

NEW DOCS

Filmmaker Marc Levin uses an infamous hoax, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion—a book fabricated in Russia at the end of the 19th century—as a foil for his attempt to find out why so many different people in so many different parts of the world believe wild conspiracies about secret Jewish societies and their conniving attempts to take over the world. The Protocols are usually marketed as actual notes from some clandestine meeting where early Jewish conspirators schematically mapped out their pernicious strategies for achieving global domination. Levin’s powerful and personal film showcases West Virginia skinhead communities that distribute the book internationally, Arab newspapers in New Jersey that serialize the book for their local readership and Ground Zero pedestrians who maintain that not a single Jewish person was killed when the towers fell on 9/11. Levin takes on these fanciful myths and tries to determine why they have such staying power. Somehow, he’s able to show the horror and humor of it all at the same time.  JJ
