Street Fight

NEW DOCS

In 2001, Newark became the site of a memorable political battle: City Councilman Cory Booker, an Ivy League upstart, took on the incumbent, Mayor Sharpe James for the leadership of one of New Jersey’s most famous cities. Street Fight chronicles that contentious mayoral race from beginning to end, including the strategy meetings and press conferences, the public confrontations and spin doctoring. The film demonstrates the complicated links between identity politics and electoral politics in contemporary American society. Ultimately, Street Fight shows just how quickly and easily city politicking can be transformed into bloody, bare-knuckle brawling.  JJ
