Sister Rose’s Passion
NEW DOCS
Sister Rose Thering, an elderly Dominican nun, loves her vocation, her religion and her God, but she hates the tide of anti-Semitism that has permeated Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism, for centuries. For her, these prejudices helped lay the foundation of the Holocaust. The impact of Sister Rose’s doctoral dissertation on the treatment of Jews in Catholic textbooks was far-reaching enough to affect the Vatican’s 1965 pronouncement that the Jews were not responsible for the death of Jesus. Years later, Sister Rose continues her fight against anti-Semitism in Christian contexts. Most recently, she took on the misguided and muddled proclamations of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.
