I for India

Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award 2006

NEW DOCS

Forty years ago, Yash Pal Suri left his home and extended family in India to pursue his medical studies in England. He bought two sets of state-of-the-art Super 8 home movie cameras and reel-to-reel tape recorders. With one, he would record the experience of his wife and three children in Britain. The other set was sent to family in India who were asked to do the same. Interspersed with sometimes bizarre excerpts from British TV shows of the era reporting on the South Asian immigrant experience, this film is lushly illustrated with personal images of love, displacement, and eventual reconciliation with a hybrid life, neither completely British or Indian. I for India is a sweet and affectionate tribute from a filmmaking daughter to her filmmaking family.  LB
