This beautifully crafted film follows the construction of a massive highway in Mexico City. The Pefiférico freeway, which directs throngs of vehicles around the sprawling metropolis, is a feat of human effort. In frame after striking frame, Rulfo abstracts this mechanistic construction into the product of human labor. The laborers are at the core of the film: their backbreaking work, their jokes and dreams, their hardhats and overalls. With breathtaking camera work, the film makes sumptuously visible the process and people behind the city’s most vital artery.  SW
