Maxed Out

NEW DOCS

Do Americans crave the lifestyles of the rich and famous? If so, are we willing to pay cash for it? This sobering documentary examines the mercenary values, unethical business practices, and often tragic repercussions of our addiction to consumer credit. The film traces this historical and cultural phenomenon using television footage, Mr. Money educational films from 1960, interviews with radio talk show host Dave Ramsey, and the stories of individuals, young and old, who got in over their heads. When Presidents from Reagan to George Bush urge us to spend beyond our means, is it any wonder that credit card companies undertake aggressive marketing campaigns to solicit college students, or that their preferred customers are people who are least able to pay? This exposé reveals why, in the words of Harvard Law Professor Liz Warren, the practice of consumer lending is “obscenely profitable.”  MP
