The Kings of Christmas

NEW DOCS

If you’ve ever complained about your neighbor’s garish holiday decorations, it’s time to visit the outer boroughs of New York, where the spirit of “abbondanza” (abundance) takes hold during the Christmas season. From Jamaica, Queens to Flatbush, Brooklyn and beyond, the Kings of Christmas—predominantly, but not exclusively, Italian-Americans—decorate their homes with elaborate displays of lights, reindeer, snowmen, Ferris wheels, and moving figures like Stumpy the Talking Christmas Tree. This film takes an abundantly good-humored approach to these holiday extravaganzas, exploring the spirit of generosity, the endless desire for bigger and better, and the sky-high December electricity bills that these happy warriors share in their quest to be the best.  MP
