NEW DOCS Thematic Africa Stories Curated by Nancy Buirski

Lumo is a young woman in the Masisi District of Democratic Republic of Congo. Like many women in the area, she suffers from fistula, a condition caused by complications in childbirth or the trauma of violent rape. At HEAL Africa hospital in Goma, Lumo receives treatment and surgery and is sheltered for the long recovery period. After healing, she leaves the protection of the hospital compound and returns to the village where war is still disrupting all lives. A solemn but hopeful story of fistula patients and their courageous healers, Lumo looks at this war torn region where rape is commonly used as a weapon of war in surprsing and effective cinema verité.  TWH
