Making “Do the Right Thing”

Thematic Power of Ten Curated by St. Clair Bourne

Captures the people, places and incidents during the making of Spike Lee’s then-controversial feature, Do the Right Thing. St. Clair Bourne filmed the neighborhood before the arrival and after the departure of the feature film crew and captured the delicate, sometimes humorous negotiations involved in getting community cooperation. The cast and crew are filmed as they react to Spike’s script and the surrounding working conditions. Featuring an original jazz score by Steve Coleman, Making tries to provide answers to political and cultural questions raised in the feature film. It explains the artistic decisions made by Lee and tells a story about the making of a major motion picture. Together, the feature film and the documentary mark the beginning and end of several cultural and political currents of that time.
