Surfing Soweto
NEW DOCS Thematic Africa Stories Curated by Nancy Buirski
There are many ways to surf a train. Three young men in South Africa risk their lives almost daily to achieve the ultimate adrenalin rush by challenging metal, leaping from platforms, and generally struttin’ on the roofs of moving intercity trains. Ducking cables in choreographed personal styles, the young men impress the ladies and achieve a kind of stardom otherwise inaccessible to them. Poverty and disenfranchisement foreclose better options and drinking gives the young men rash courage. Their mothers struggle to keep them on the straight and narrow, but the boys are hooked. Will the recent electrocution of a fellow surfer jolt them into changing their lives? SW
