During the Vietnam War, more bombs were dropped on Laos than were deployed during World War I and World War II combined. Famed cinematographer Ellen Kuras (4 Little Girls, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Thavisouk Phrasavath have collaborated to create what is at once an epic story of a people brutally vanquished by a dirty war and also an intimate portrait of one Laotian family’s struggle to confront the psychic wounds of exile. Thavisouk recounts the chilling tale of how he survived the war as a boy, fleeing across the Mekong River on two inflated plastic bags, only to fight a second war on the streets of New York City when he and his family sought refuge there in 1981. Filmed over the course of twenty-three years, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) is a lyrical meditation on the ravages of war, the meaning of sanctuary, and the enduring bonds of family.  PB
