Black Journal
Career Award St. Clair Bourne
From 1968 to 1970, Black Journal was the one hour of television a month for, about, and by African Americans. St. Clair Bourne was one of its producers. The festival will feature three segments produced by Bourne that, each in its own way, illustrate the disparity between population and influence, representation and ultimate power. Malcom X University features African American students at Duke University who object to the lack of African American professors and of African American history courses and ultimately withdraw. Soul, Sounds & Money compares the vast number of black performers in the music industry to the very small number of African American music executives and decision-makers. Similarly, New York City’s huge black population is vastly under-represented on the police force. In Black Cop an African American policeman in Harlem talks about the negative ways he is perceived by his community for enforcing a “white” code, and how that conflicts with his desire to help the people.
