It’s Tuesday in Dr. Nayna Patel’s surrogacy center in Gujarat, India, and she moves seamlessly from cell phone to Cesarean and back again with assembly-line efficiency. This is a business, after all, and Dr. Patel is just one link in a chain that stretches from the United States to India to Israel profiting from the globalized business of baby making. Money is being made, but dreams are also coming true: an American egg donor can contribute to her family’s income; surrogate mothers in India can provide their families with a home and their children with an education; and couples in Israel otherwise unable to conceive are able to welcome a child into the family. Outsourcing this incredibly intimate experience seems at once unfathomable and inevitable. Luckily for us, Zippi Brand Frank’s deft handling of the complex issues inherent in globalized baby production enables this multi-layered film to inhabit the grey area between right and wrong.  SB
