What sustains a community’s spirit? For Pierfranco Midali, train driver, sundial enthusiast, and dedicated mayor of the tiny hamlet of Viganella (population 197), a well-designed town square and sunny days are essential. Pierfranco has his work cut out for him, however: nestled within a stunning valley in the Italian Alps, Viganella is plunged into the long shadow of a nearby mountain for three months every year. Pierfranco lights upon a solution that so ingeniously weds aesthetics and engineering, it could only have come from a compatriot of Leonardo da Vinci. This beautifully shot film closely observes the natural splendor and the human eccentricity of Viganella, lovingly blending the absurdism of Fellini with the generosity of DeSantis as it offers up the message that it’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
