Promised Land

NEW DOCS

The 1913 Native Land Act, a precursor to and bulwark of apartheid in South Africa, led to the forcible removal of six million black people from their homes. The ANC government established the Land Claims Court in 1996 to redress this historical injustice. With a combination of frank, compelling interviews, archival footage, and probing yet impartial observation, Yoruba Richen presents the struggles of families involved in two land claims, documenting the efforts of the descendants of the dispossessed to reclaim their inheritance from current landowners. Richen seeds this narrative of broken promises and contested reconciliation with generosity and conviction, allowing her subjects to explore for themselves the personal and political implications of home.  MP
