SDF: In-the-Works
Conversations
The Southern Documentary Fund (SDF) is proud to present In-the-Works at Full Frame again this year. This program provides audiences with a unique opportunity to watch documentaries in different stages of production and to participate in the critique process. It also gives North Carolina filmmakers the opportunity to receive feedback from a dedicated assembly of their peers and serious documentary enthusiasts. Musings of an Iraqi Patriot, directed by Judy Van Wyk recounts the story of Ahmed Fadaam, an Iraqi sculptor and New York Times reporter who fled Baghdad in 2008 after receiving death threats from Sunni insurgents. The film focuses upon Ahmed’s struggle to adapt to life in the United States and his fervent quest to convey to Americans the story of his city, his people, and his country torn apart by war. Althea, Directed by Rex Miller: Althea Gibson, a truant from the rough streets of Harlem, emerged as a most unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world of the 1950s. Althea’s life and achievements transcend sports. Her roots as a sharecropper’s daughter, her family’s migration north to Harlem in the thirties, her mentoring from Sugar Ray Robinson, David Dinkins, and others, her fame that thrust her unwillingly into the glare of the early Civil Rights movement, all bring her story into the much broader realm of African American history.
