Hell and Back Again

NEW DOCS

Filmmaker Danfung Dennis embedded with the Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment during an assault on a Taliban stronghold. Near the end of this mission, Sergeant Nathan Harris was severely wounded. Hell and Back Again follows Nathan home to North Carolina, as he attempts to heal from his injuries and resume the life he once knew with his loving wife, Ashley. The most mundane tasks are now arduous. To the young Marine the Wal-Mart parking lot seems more daunting than the battlefield. With stunning cinematography and the careful orchestration of sounds, the film moves seamlessly back and forth between the turmoil of Nathan’s war in Afghanistan and the mental and physical anguish of his recovery back home. The intricate, surreal juxtapositions, which have the viewer ricocheting between America and the Middle East, come as close as cinema ever has to capturing how a Marine experiences war. This powerful, compassionate film is a gut-wrenching reminder that a battle at the front is always followed by another at home.  ST
