The Pipe
NEW DOCS
Shell E&P Ireland plans to build a gas pipeline off the west coast of Ireland that will run underwater to the coast and then over nine kilometers above ground, through farms in the close-knit village of Rossport, to a refinery. The gas promises to bring prosperity to the area, but it also threatens to mar the landscape and disrupt the livelihoods of local farmers and fishermen. Villagers fear that if the pipe fails, the consequences could be catastrophic, so they resist. Five men are jailed for blocking construction, further enraging the people of Rossport. The conflict escalates, setting in motion a dramatic story of environmental protest, civil disobedience, violence, opposing legal actions, and disagreement among neighbors about the proper course of action. The filmmakers have captured the protests, contentious community meetings, and legal proceedings from the inside, and they have found memorable and heroic people to tell this complex story. AT
