Unlikely Treasures

NEW DOCS

A gaggle of delightfully eccentric collectors welcome you into their obsessions with staplers, copper molds, mid-century clocks, small plastic fruits, Statue of Liberty postcards, and other items undervalued by average folk. Not hoarders, these are high-functioning individuals with tidy apartments and personal relationships. What, really, is the difference between one collector’s seemingly irrational passion and the role of the culturally valued curator at a museum? To answer the question, the film takes us on visits to private collections as well as to the City Reliquary in Brooklyn, which displays personal accumulations in a sociable atmosphere, and an institution named Elsewhere in Greensboro, once a junk store where nothing was for sale and now a unique site for artist installations.  LB
