Raw Material, Indigestible?

Thematic One Foot in the Archives (Without Narration) Curated by Rick Prelinger

What should filmmakers do when they come upon archival footage that perhaps they shouldn’t show? Archives are full of dramatic, spellbinding, and enigmatic material waiting to be discovered and reused, but some of it might give a filmmaker pause. While the archival films and fragments in this program (all from Prelinger Archives) contain fascinating images that would entice most documentary makers—Ku Klux Klan marches, footage from state mental hospitals, for example—each is also problematic, raising complex questions of ethics, context, and courtesy. How might we contextualize layered and disturbing imagery? What films are best not edited or excerpted? Should some remain on the shelf, unviewed? How can we present an imperfect and contentious past? Is there an emerging ethics of archival reuse, and if not, should we work towards elaborating one? RP
