News of the Day

Thematic One Foot in the Archives (Without Narration) Curated by Rick Prelinger

Before the age of television, people watched the day’s news at their local movie theaters, where brief newsreels were shown before the feature films. Some cities even had dedicated newsreel theaters. To take our audience back in time, we will show a News of the Day clip before and another after our presentation of America Lost and Found. We hope that seeing similar imagery put to use in America Lost and Found—both clips are from 1937—will serve as a valuable illustration of the ways that archival materials can be creatively edited and assembled into a coherent whole greater than its parts. News of the Day’s February 10, 1937, newsreel (vol. 8 no. 243) sweeps across the US and abroad, with reports on a toddler’s boxing contest in Florida, a plane that plunged into the San Francisco Bay, and a skirmish in the Spanish Civil War, among other topics. September 15, 1937 (vol. 9 no. 200), brings us a huge chemical fire and the first girl ever to spurn the crown of Miss America.  ST
