There has long been a tradition in the Netherlands of lighting bonfires on New Year’s Eve. Two coastal communities in The Hague, Scheveningen and Duindorp, have made some of the largest bonfires in the world. Residents of these neighborhoods stack thousands of wooden pallets on the beach in the rain, snow, and wind for days leading up to ignition. This observational film portrays the construction and destruction of Scheveningen’s massive pallet tower as the community attempts to best Duindorp. The giant bonfire finale comprises captivating elemental footage that will make you marvel at our ancient fascination with fire.  NT
