In 1970, with the women’s liberation movement in full swing, Audrey Flack was the only woman included in the 22 Realists show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Yet after achieving success as one of the leading photo-realists, Flack shifted from painting to sculpture. In Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack we meet the artist as she’s ready to resume work on the painting in progress that she abandoned 36 years ago. We follow Flack as she visits artists’ studios, Chelsea galleries, and museum exhibitions and listen as she recalls her childhood and artistic training—as well as highlights such as throwing paint from 30 feet away and “hanging out” with abstract expressionist artists Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning at a time when “nobody thought about money, you just wanted to make great art.” By the film’s end, we not only learn about Flack’s personal life—her heartaches and triumphs—but also gain insight into the role that art plays in our own lives.  ER
