Volunteer Spotlight: Travis Matthews

Two Green Team members in the festival Plaza

What brought you to Full Frame? How long have you been volunteering?

I started volunteering at Full Frame because I had a friend who used to work with the organization. I’ve been volunteering for about six years.

Why do you volunteer on the Green Team?

I was with the production team for a while, but one year they were full, so the Green Team was where I landed. Once I was there, I liked the people I was working with, I liked working outside, and I liked moving around as opposed to being at a table. I like being able to self-manage and make my own decisions, and that’s why I keep coming back to the Green Team.

I don’t really put my name in for other teams anymore. I stand in the same place and manage the same lines, I see the same people coming back year after year— the food vendors, the police officers. It’s kind of fun.

What’s your favorite thing about being a volunteer?

It’s a really nice break. I work a 9-5 job—in an IT role at UNC— and it’s a nice change of pace once a year to just go be outside in downtown Durham in the middle of the day.

A perk of being a volunteer is getting five complimentary tickets for films screening at the festival. What’s your favorite documentary that you’ve seen?

I knew you were going to ask this question…I’ve never actually been to a movie. I do use the tickets, though—I have friends who want to go, so I try to give the tickets to them.
